Elaine is originally from Drumbo, near Lisburn and after a time living in Perth, Western Australia returned to Northern Ireland and married Nigel in October 1979. They have two sons Richard born in 1981 and Michael born in 1984, a daughter-in-law Carly a grandson Franklin and granddaughter Molly. They moved to their current home in East Belfast in 1984 when Richard was three years old and Michael was five months old.

Michael has lived in East Belfast all his life and is currently living in the Upper Knockbreda area. He had many interests in his formative years and was educated at Campbell College. He is married to Carly from Melbourne, Australia and they have one son Franklin Rodney Barr who was born in November 2019 and a daughter Molly Anne Barr born in May 2024 .
